Abstract

This article investigates a development of recent buildings close to the English M62 motorway in order to assess the evolving nature of the urban environment in Northern English cities. This motorway has been promoted as an integral part of various regional strategies for economic regeneration and a selection of these proposals is reviewed. The article then describes several buildings and businesses found at Junction 27 of the motorway, close to the city of Leeds. The writings of Augé, Easterling and Keiller are used to provide a commentary on the emerging exurban landscape along the motorway. The article explores the form provincial cities such as Leeds are taking next and considers whether their economic and social centres of gravity can still be found in the inner urban areas. The article concludes by questioning the sustainability of urban growth facilitated by the motorway network and premised on individual car use.
