The research-practice gap in spatial planning

Abstract

The research-practice gap has been extensively discussed in multiple disciplines, including spatial planning. Despite different contributions on this topic over the last decades, the gap persists between planning research carried out in academic contexts and the policies, plans and projects prepared by local authorities and planning departments. Aiming at bringing a comprehensive perspective of existing methods to address this gap, the paper reviews the literature on this topic focusing on the needs and concerns of planning practice, which are identified through semi-structured interviews with practitioners. Furthermore, the emphasis is on identifying pragmatic approaches to bridge the gap. As such, the paper intends to highlight paths to build effective and continuous knowledge exchange between research and practice in spatial planning.
