Radical Pragmatism: The Cold War Croatian Diaspora and its Visions of a Post-Yugoslav State

Abstract

Opposition to the existence of socialist Yugoslavia and support for an independent Croatia were not the simple binaries that academic historiography has often portrayed. Just as ‘Yugoslavism’ was a contested idea, so too were ‘anti-Yugoslavism’ and ‘post-Yugoslavism’, at least when understood constructively rather than deconstructively. This essay examines how various actors in the post-World War II Croatian diaspora conceived of a possible future independent Croatia. In tracing these imaginings, we can complicate how both politics and identity in the region were understood, expanding our insight into the spectrum of ideas associated with—even if in opposition to—the Yugoslav idea.
