Abstract

This article analyses elite narratives of how Ukrainian national identification changed in response to varying levels of Russian threat. We conducted a content analysis of articles from the websites of four regionally and linguistically diverse Ukrainian print media titles published between February 2021 and May 2022. We identified narratives of Ukrainian national identification that are both centrifugal and centripetal, with the full-scale Russian invasion initiating a shift in the dominant frame from polarisation to ‘defensive nationalism’. Supporting existing research, we additionally found evidence that narratives of Ukrainian national identity have emphasised civic attributes, particularly democratic values and acceptance of linguistic diversity.
