Abstract
Indonesia faces considerable challenges in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. Despite an increasing focus on fostering an innovation-driven economy, gaps remain in purpose, clarity and alignment between STEM education development and funding. The Prabowo government has the opportunity to offer clear direction, drive innovation, and commit to investment to ensure progress in STEM education, thereby supporting Indonesia's broader economic and developmental aspirations towards a knowledge-based economy. This viewpoint advocates for public–private partnerships (PPPs) and civil society engagement as solutions to advance STEM in Indonesia, drawing from the experiences of emerging examples and considerations of multistakeholder collaboration. By leveraging private sector expertise in STEM education objectives, curriculum development, and investment, Indonesia can advance access and quality of STEM education and address financial gaps, fostering a more competitive, innovation-driven economy. This strategy supports Indonesia's pursuit of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education, and SDG 17, and underscores the importance of partnerships. Strengthening PPPs, along with civil society collaboration, is essential for effectively implementing the SDGs, enabling Indonesia to fulfil its educational commitments, advance towards a robust knowledge-based economy, and not be left behind its regional counterparts.
