One Tambon One Product (OTOP) implementation by the Thai Government

Abstract

This research examined Thailand’s OTOP policy as an implementation of the OVOP model in developing countries by using qualitative analysis to investigate government and enterprise viewpoints. The study highlighted OTOP’s significant role in improving productivity, market access, and craft preservation, underscored by strong sales performance, especially in businesses blending traditional knowledge with technology. However, challenges such as limited funding, skill deficits in local officials, support overlaps, weak support structures, ambiguous guidelines, and inadequate evaluations compromised the policy’s efficacy, particularly affecting lower-potential enterprises. Recommendations included tailoring programs to participant-specific needs and establishing clear standards and objectives to ensure consistent implementation. Further research should enrich the understanding of OVOP in different contexts.
