Towards a self-sufficient navy: the national shipbuilding initiative with TCG Berk and TCG Peyk in Türkiye

Abstract

This study aims to provide a comprehensive account of the construction and operational history of the destroyer escorts TCG Berk and TCG Peyk, built in the late 1960s as key milestones in Türkiye’s efforts to develop an indigenous naval capability. Emphasising their role in marking a significant turning point in the country’s domestic shipbuilding process, the research explores how these ships were built using significant domestic resources despite financial, technological, and geopolitical constraints. Given the closed nature of the Turkish Navy archives and the reliance on hearsay and often conflicting information, this study draws upon interviews with retired naval personnel who served onboard these ships to bridge the scholarly gap. The findings indicate that while TCG Berk and TCG Peyk faced design and operational challenges, their construction represented a crucial step towards a solid national naval building capability.
