‘Abduct her before another man does’: evolving consensual bride abduction patterns in Kazakhstan’s Jetisu province

Abstract

In this research note, I explore the phenomenon of consensual bride abduction in Kazakhstan’s Jetisu province, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and my personal family history. While earlier works on bride abduction mainly focused on forced marriages, in this study, I focus on the growing prevalence of consensual abductions, where couples opt for abduction to navigate cultural, economic and social constraints. Drawing on my extensive fieldwork in Kazakhstan’s Jetisu province, including the marriages of my grandmother, parents and brother, I critically discuss how the motivations of couples and their families for consensual bride abductions have evolved over time. In doing so, I offer a deeply intimate perspective on how local communities view and navigate this evolving marriage tradition, amid both economic and societal changes. By illustrating the nuanced and context-specific nature of the practice, I aim to contribute to a broader understanding of marriage customs in contemporary Kazakhstan.
