Putting the K in rank: how kindergarten classrooms impact short- and long-run outcomes

Abstract

I study the impact of kindergarten class rank on short- and long-run outcomes, using data from the Tennessee STAR project. I find a causal relationship between a student’s kindergarten classroom rank and test scores in grades 1–8, high school achievement, and whether they take a college entrance exam. Furthermore, a higher rank in kindergarten causes an increase in study effort, the value of schooling, and initiative in the classroom, as measured in grade 4.
