Implementing Action Learning: challenges and strategies in Thai organizations

Abstract

Implementing Action Learning (AL) in non-Western contexts like Thailand requires careful consideration of cultural nuances. This research investigates the challenges faced by pioneering Thai AL coaches in adapting AL to the Thai cultural context and the strategies they employed to overcome these challenges. The study highlights that challenges include misconceptions about AL, self-defense among participants, hierarchical influences, and underdeveloped questioning skills. Effective implementation strategies include experiential learning to promote AL understanding, thoughtful participant selection, development of a growth mindset, phased AL implementation, and adaptive coaching techniques. The findings underscore the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to maximize the effectiveness of AL and provide valuable insights for organizations seeking to implement AL in Thailand and similar cultural settings.
