Abstract

Purpose: Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century that requires institutional change as well as active civic engagement. This study examines the civic education and how it influences environmental citizenship of university students of Punjab, Pakistan.Methodolgy; This study used a combination of qualitative data (thematic interviews) and quantitative data (survey data from SPSS) and was thus of mixed-methods design.Findings; The results show that students have moderate to high levels of civic education awareness, climate change awareness, high environmental interest and positive attitudes towards civic responsibility. There are however gaps in formal curriculum and integration, in experiential learning and structured institutional support. Themes from the qualitative findings include civic awareness, rights and responsibilities, youth engagement, social media influence, and institutional barriers.Implications; The study finds that civic education plays a crucial role in the development of environmental citizenship and should be included in the higher education program for fostering sustainable development.
