Abstract

Purpose: Work–life balance is now a major issue for women workers who have to perform their work, balance with responsibilities of family and households. The purpose of this study was to explore factors that affect the work–life balance of female employees in banking sector of Mirpurkhas, Sindh, Pakistan focusing on personal life satisfaction, work satisfaction and organizational work–life balance policies.Design/Methodology/Approach: A quantitative research design was followed and primary data was collected using a structured closed-ended questionnaire from 40 women working in the public and private sector Banks. Data were analysed by SPSS with reliability testing, descriptive statistics and mean and standard deviation, and Pearson correlation analysis. The instrument had a good internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha value of 0.859.Findings: The descriptive findings showed that majority of the respondents were young, unmarried and had medium size family. Results also demonstrated that longer working hours, overtime working hours as well as household roles had a negative impact on the respondents' personal life and work non-work balance. The results of the correlation analysis showed that personal life satisfaction was significantly and positively related to work–life balance (r = .823, p < .001) and work satisfaction showed the highest correlation (r = .869, p < .001). There was also a strong, positive correlation of the work–life balance policies with the dependent variable (r = .794, p < .001). Thus, all three hypotheses were confirmed.Implications/Originality/Value: It is concluded that supportive working conditions, effective organizational policies, reduced overtime requirements and increased family support enhance the work–life balance of women employees.
