Abstract

Zusammenfassung Bitcoin und andere virtuelle Währungen erfahren eine wachsende Bedeutung. Sie sind kein Geld, aber werden von einem größer werdenden Nutzerkreis als Zahlungsmittel und Vermögensanlage verwendet. Notenbanken und Aufsichtsbehörden haben aber Risiken identifiziert und sehen Regulierungsbedarf. Zu den Herausforderungen in der EU zählen der Verbraucherschutz und die Bekämpfung von Geldwäsche und Terrorismusfinanzierung. Die EU-Institutionen überarbeiten aktuell die Geldwäscherichtlinie, um erstmalig virtuelle Währungen einzubeziehen. Auch auf der Tagesordnung der Finanzminister und Notenbankchefs der G20-Staaten steht die Regulierung von virtuellen Währungen.
