Abstract

Using individual-level data in Indonesia, this study examines how various forms of crime victimization are affected by social capital, i.e., neighbor trust and the quality of neighborhood relations. However, the trust variable suffers from an endogeneity problem and therefore when regression analysis is performed the findings are biased. Hence, we employed the 2SLS method and used an instrumental variable to address the endogeneity problem. The main finding in this study corroborated the hypothesis that after controlling for individual attributes and contextual factors, social capital plays an important role in reducing the risk of crime victimization. Additionally, it also demonstrated that social capital does not invariably produce a reduction in all categories of criminal activity.
