How Employee Competencies Affect Productivity of Information Technology Professionals: An Indian Study

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study how training need assessment mediates the relationship between employee competencies and productivity among middle-level information technology (IT) professionals in the Indian context. The study sample consisted of 421 middle-level managers from various IT companies across India. A structured questionnaire was developed to collect data and analyze it using structural equation modeling, employing the Sobel test mediation approach. The study’s findings measure the direct and indirect effects of path relationships among competence factors, as well as training need assessment (TNA) and productivity. Furthermore, the study’s conclusions postulate and support the mediating effect and role of TNA. The present study reveals partial mediation, leaving scope for further theoretical model development that includes and tests additional mediators beyond TNA. The research is exclusive in analyzing the relationship between employee competencies and productivity, where training need assessment acts as a mediator from the perspective of the IT sector, providing empirical evidence to the existing literature.
