Reducing precarity in Guinea: the role of natural resources in the effect of industrialization on employment and its vulnerability

Abstract

Reducing precarity by offering decent jobs to the population is a challenge faced by governments worldwide. In Guinea, unemployment is also a significant challenge for the government, which seeks ways to mitigate it. However, given that Guinea possesses abundant natural resources, the revenues derived from these resources can help industrialize the country, creating more jobs and reducing vulnerable employment. The paper’s purpose is to explore the role of natural resources in the impact of industrialization on employment and its vulnerability. Data were collected for the period 1991–2021, and the estimation was conducted using the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) approach. The results revealed that revenues from natural resources can be used to boost industrialization, which, in turn, benefits employment improvements and reduces vulnerable employment. As far as the policy implications are concerned, governments should put in place incentives such as tax exemptions for high-tech industry facilities. This could not only attract investors to industrial partnerships but lead investors to opt more for local industrial development. Similarly, policies aimed at improving education, skills development, and technological advancement will also be crucial to reducing the vulnerability of jobs and ensuring a long-term sustainable growth trajectory.
