Abstract

In their school choice making process parents have to take into account several factors in order to reach a conclusion about the schools on offer. Good quality has been prioritized by parents exercising school choice. This qualitative investigation aims to shed light onto the quality constructs taken into account by parents when making school choice in the Turkish Cypriot context. The decision-making processes of parents in their school choice is evaluated in an effort to illuminate the determinants of high quality education from parents’ perspectives as well as how they construct quality education as a concept. In order to fulfill the research aim, twenty parents who are stratified by the social status and the school are interviewed. The data are analysed adopting thematic analysis. The findings reveal that all participants are in search of the best quality school for their children and that school reputation and high quality instruction play a central role in informing parental school choice. It is also revealed that parents consider school reputation and quality of instruction in constructing quality as a concept.
