A review of the research on the failure potential of landslide dams caused by overtopping and seepage

Abstract

Landslide dams are naturally formed dams with loose structures, poor stability and strong permeability, and they lack prevention measures such as reinforcement, anti-seepage, and spillways to avoid dam failure. It is highly prone to overtopping and seepage failure, which seriously threaten the safety of people and property in the downstream areas. Based on the main failure modes of landslide dams, the progress of research on failure processes, failure mechanisms, and influencing factors was summarized and analyzed. The calculation equation of overtopping erosion and the criteria of landslide dam failure caused by seepage were reviewed. The failure potential of landslide dams caused by overtopping, seepage, and their combined effects and the problems in the current research on the safety of landslide dams were investigated. Some subjects that could be studied in the future were proposed. The first is the inhomogeneity and uncertainty of the spatial distribution of dam materials in landslide dams. The second is the failure processes and mechanisms of landslide dams caused by combined multiple factors. The third is the theory and method of model tests for landslide dams. The fourth is the influence of genetic types of landslide dams on their failure mechanisms. This review can provide a reference for safety research and risk prevention of landslide dam disasters.
