Abstract

This article analyses the McKinsey portfolio method when applied to start-up companies. Using a self-constructed case study it is demonstrated that the application of norm strategies to start-up conpanies is problematic. These companies generally feature an unbalanced business portfolio and a shortage of financial resources. Although it is possible to utilize the method for any firm mode up of distinctive strategic business units, it is of disproportionately larger value in the case of highly diversified companies. Yet, in order to attain financial stability, start-up companies also nerd strategic reasoning as put forward by the McKinsey method. Thus, this article concludes that the major benefit of the management tool for start-up companies is to enlarge and to foster strategic thinking. Copyright Physica-Verlag 2005
