Abstract

Human being migrates from village to city in search of gaining better life standards such as better health, Good education, better employments and greater access to social and cultural activities. Due to Urbanisation, Udham Singh Nagar a populated district of the Uttarakhand State, India has experienced rapid variations in the land use land cover (LULC) specially with reference to built-up areas when Uttarakhand state, India was not separated from Uttar Pradesh, India and after to form a new state (Uttarakhand) for a period of more than two decades. The present study reveals impact of urbanisation on various LULC classes (such as forest, agriculture, built-up area, water bodies and barren land) and land surface temperature (LST) by using GIS and remote sensing technologies. Landsat satellite imageries of two different years April 2000 and April 2020 were received by USGS Earth Explorer and evaluated the change detection in Udham Singh Nagar a district of Uttarakhand State, India by using Maximum likelihood classification technique. In addition, an algorithm is implemented for retrieval of LST. It is found that significant built-up expansions (formation of urban sprawl in LULC) have taken place area change in 223.28 percentages from 2000 to 2020. Notably, the built-up expansions have taken place along the national highway NH 9 and NH 309 in the study area over the last 20 years as a result, there has been a notable reduction in water bodies, dense forest declined in north-west region of the study area and average LST is significantly increased by 1 °C in urban area.
