Abstract

The main objective of the paper is to better understand the perceptions of entrepreneurs of small and medium enterprises in two European countries (Romania, an EU country, and Serbia an EU candidate country) regarding circular economy. As a research methodology, we used the interview which was sent as a Google Form to entrepreneurs in Romania and Serbia during May and June 2024. The sample included 8 Romanian SMEs and 9 Serbian SMEs, comprising 11 small and 6 medium-sized enterprises. The results highlight the obstacles entrepreneurs face in transitioning to a circular economy (lack of financial resources needed for investments and the reluctance of consumers to pay more when the standard of living is still low), as well as their views on the potential benefits of environmentally friendly practices for their businesses. The findings are useful for governments in better adjusting their strategies, especially regarding awareness campaigns meant to promote the advantages of the circular economy for the community.
