Total Interpretive Structural Modeling-Polarity (TISM-P) to analyze the impact of energy on the sustainability performance of hotels: a case study

Abstract

This study has been done on ISO 14001: Environment Management Systems and ISO 22000: Food Safety Management Certified Hotels. As these hotels claim themselves as sustainable hotels, there are still requirements for highly flexible systems to cope with black-swan events and cover high performance. The ISO 14001 certifications cover the environmental dimension of sustainability. However, the study aims to consider the energy dimension flexibility system in sustainable hotels to establish a correct baseline and energy performance indicator. In this study, mixed-method research has been used to identify and validate the study. The Total Interpretive Structural Modeling-Polarity (TISM-P) has been used to establish the relationship among sustainability and energy variables, which is further validated by using rough set theory. The methodology followed is based on the implementation of sustainable flexible indicators at the energy review stage. The fundamental results were obtaining the energy baseline, which is an extension of the triple bottom-line sustainability framework in the hotel industry. With better energy standards, the rate of return can be improved over shorter time periods. The flexibility aspects of the energy dimension help the hotel cope with the unique business model threats as well as black-swan event threats in the minimum amount of time and effort. The novelty of this research can be seen not only in the specifically developed sustainable model with flexible energy dimensions in the hotels but also as one of the opportunities for improvement consisting of replacing the typical business model of hotels with energy-preferred, socially accountable hotels.
