Abstract

India has been developing strategies and implementing several measures to achieve its Nationally Determined Contributions target and decarbonization commitments. Generating power through renewable energy sources is an integral part of creating 100% decarbonized societies. In the present study, an integrated renewable energy system model is developed and simulated for five different cities in the Gujarat state of India. Developed architecture is simulated to develop 100% decarbonized communities which shall involve no involvement of fossil-fuel-based electric power generators. Desk research on the potential of available resources concludes that solar, wind, pumped hydro, and battery energy storage should be optimum for consideration. Solar–wind–pumped hydro storage system had the lowest net present cost and cost of energy values for all the cities and, hence, is deemed the most feasible configuration. Except for Palanpur city, solar–pumped hydro had the second-best scenario having low net present cost and cost of energy values. For Porbandar city, solar coupled with a battery energy storage system was most economical and achieved maximum reliability of electricity service. Only wind and pumped hydro energy storage were found to be techno-economically not feasible for the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara.
