Abstract

This study utilizes the trajectory of the gravity center, bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis, and the allometric growth model to comprehensively reveal spatial correlation between economic development (ED) and carbon emission (CE) in the Lanzhou–Xining urban agglomeration (LXUA). Moreover, the study unveils the allometric growth relationship between these two. The results are shown as followings. First, the movement trajectory of ED and CE were relatively consistent from 2000 to 2020 in LXUA. Second, there was a significant spatial correlation between ED and CE, with higher level of economic development tending to correspond to higher carbon emission. Third, however, the allometric growth relationship between ED and CE was predominantly negative. With the increasing rate of ED outpacing that of CE in most counties, signifying a shift towards green development in the region. Moreover, the number of counties with downward change of allometric growth relationship was greater than that with upward change. These insights enhance our understanding of LXUA’s environmental landscape and provide valuable guidance for sustainable, low-carbon urban agglomeration development.
