Abstract

Despite being seen as eco-friendly, the photovoltaic solar panels sector faces challenges in environmental sustainability due to projected waste of 60 to 78 million tons by 2050, which contains metals and toxic materials that, if mismanaged, could harm the environment and waste valuable resources. Implementing Circular Economy (CE) principles in photovoltaic solar panels (PvSP) life cycle enhances the environmental advantages of solar energy by reducing emissions linked to manufacturing processes and increasing recycling and recovery rates. Hence, the objective of this research is to analyse the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for the implementation of CE in the PvSP sector. To analyse these CSFs, a review of the literature was carried out, and with the evaluation from specialists in the context of solar energy the interrelationship among the pairs of factors was extracted. The DEMATEL method was used for this purpose. The present research contributes with a framework of 15 CSFs for CE implementation in the sector, divided into five categories based on the previous literature, as well as the priority and the relationships among these factors. Similarities with other research results were highlighted, indicating potentialities to introduce circularity for photovoltaic solar energy.
