Abstract

The growing imperative for sustainability within the global fashion industry has accelerated the adoption of recycled materials, particularly plastics, in garment production. While this trend aligns with international environmental objectives, its ethical and social implications within developing economies, such as Nigeria, remain critically underexamined. This paper explores the ethical considerations and societal impacts of integrating recycled plastics into the Nigerian textile industry, highlighting a significant research gap regarding stakeholder perspectives on recycled fashion in the Global South. Anchored in circular economy theory and ethical frameworks, this study employs a scoping review methodology to systematically analyse the environmental, ethical, and social dimensions emerging from the incorporation of recycled plastics into fashion enterprises. Drawing on a constructivist epistemological stance, it proposes a theoretical model to contextualize the knowledge systems shaping this evolving practice. The paper concludes by offering strategic policy recommendations and an outcome matrix aimed at fostering a socially inclusive, ethically responsible, and environmentally sustainable textile industry in Nigeria.
