Abstract
Summary This study aimed to analyze the adherence of the construction system known as steel frame to the principles of the Circular Economy and its contributions to sustainable construction, which require specific considerations related to design, material selection, and construction processes. To achieve this, the research adopted a methodological approach combining literature review and comparative analysis, applying indicators from the Overall Circularity Effectiveness Index (OCE) to quantitatively assess the alignment of construction systems with circularity principles. The OCE Index was chosen because it offers a construction-oriented and quantifiable framework that enables clear comparisons between systems, using measurable indicators related to material use, energy consumption, water demand, emissions, and waste generation. Studies have shown that the steel frame system can lead to lower environmental impacts, reduced energy demand, and minimized solid waste generation during construction. The main results indicated that, when combined with sustainable materials such as wood or precast concrete, steel frame construction offers significant environmental advantages over conventional masonry and concrete systems. This was evidenced by its higher OCE score, suggesting greater adherence to Circular Economy principles. By contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the steel frame’s potential within a circular construction paradigm, the study provides valuable insights that can guide architects, engineers, and construction professionals in making informed decisions regarding its broader adoption. Furthermore, the findings support the development of public policy measures aimed at promoting circular practices—such as tax incentives for low-impact materials, procurement criteria favoring sustainable methods, and regulations encouraging life cycle-oriented project planning and resource efficiency.
