Abstract

The paper analyzes the economic and geopolitical opportunities and challenges of ratifying the EU–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. After 25 years of negotiations, the free trade agreement still lacks unanimous support from the EU member states, as concerns about the future of the agricultural sector and the enforcement of EU environmental standards and deforestation principles clash with the bloc’s strategic needs. The paper emphasizes that the free trade agreement aims to create one of the largest free trade areas in the world. However, for Europe, it is not the economic benefits that make the agreement most attractive, but rather its strategic significance in an era when the EU faces trade disputes with its two largest trading partners – the United States of America and China.
