Abstract

The article presents and analyzes the EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, which enters into force on 1 May 2024. It integrates for the first time the EU‘s new approach to trade and sustainable development and includes parameters with a high degree of engagement in the field of the environment and labor protection expressed in the chapter „Trade and sustainable development“. The agreements and standards include specific provisions on sustainable food systems, on small and medium-sized enterprises, on gender equality and on trade and fossil fuel subsidy reform and liberalizes environmental goods and services upon entry into force. Therefore, it is possible trade sanctions to be imposed in cases of serious violations of these standards. The main issue is to find a sustainable balance and symbiosis between the integrated new European approach and the economic parameters. This will help the trade agreement to be more economically efficient and increase the trade exchange between the EU and New Zealand.
