Abstract

This article presents the conditions for the improvement of quality management systems, environmental and food safety in small and mediumsized enterprises in Poland. The results of the research show that the implementation of these systems is substantially influenced by the institutional clients' requirements (especially multinational companies expecting their suppliers to introduce the tools to ensure quality processes and products), legal requirements (resulting from EU directives) and the image effect. Results of this study also indicate that, after implementing the quality management system, the companies (especially small and medium ones) see a lot of internal benefits including the increased staff awareness and commitment, the opportunity to improve processes, improvement of standardization activities, reduction of internal inconsistencies, improvement of internal communication, reduction of the complaint number/cost, increase of process efficiency and the ability to improve the products.
