Abstract

In Switzerland, electricity conservation has been given one of the top priorities in the programme "Energy 2000", in order to avoid any development of a national nuclear power capacity. This conservation effort is concentrated on constructed areas as they seem to offer many electricity saving opportunities, especially in the building's common services, namely the services addressed to all the residents of a building. This paper presents a methodology to compute specific electricity consumption indexes enabling to assess the efficiency of common electricity services in a building for fairly homogeneous groups of services (lighting of common space, laundry equipment, lifts, electric fans, etc.). We derive a diagnosis of electricity performance allowing to assess the electricity conservation potential for a given building. The assessment is based on the comparison between the values of these indexes computed for the building and some target values stemming from the reference population distribution of such indexes. The methodology is illustrated by means of the results of a project carried out on a sample of residential buildings in Geneva.
