Abstract

The article analyses the growth of farmers and the intensive family agriculture during the development and consolidation of the polis in ancient Greece. The initial point is the current state of the subject according to the more significant specialized bibliography, and it ls intended to search for three main factors of the appointed historical situation: the ways of access to the land, technological conditions, and the farming strategies. In the examination of every aspect it is assumed and established the fundamental function of the autonomous cultivators; and the conclusion points out that the conceivably egalitarian character acquired by the Greek communities was the consequence of the peasantry's leading role between the eighth and the fourth centuries B.C.
