Abstract

This paper puts forward a dual historiographical revision. It first contradicts the idea, inspired by the French model and a widely assumed approach in research in 19th-Century Spain, that the Liberal Revolution meant the emergence of a new kind of land ownership, the so called perfect property, this is to say, not divided. Second, it shows the need to approach the study of liberal measures from the perspective of the explicit intention of legislator to turn property into something sacred. According to the author, this new approach requires historical research to be orientated towards studying the conditions to embark on ownership so that the analysis of the legislative provisions is not sufficient. Furthermore, such a study will only be fruitful if the historians are explicitly ready to “desacralize” the concept of land ownership.
