Abstract

This paper seeks to analyse the different levels of dependence from land ownership among the peasantry. The first part describes the fragmentation of manorialism and the complex network of property rights in the hands of the lords, both the nobility and the ecclesiastical institutions. The second part deals with the rent. And the third part considers the relations between manorialism and land ownership with the evolution of settlement and conflicts among the lords.
