Abstract

Forest history of modern Spain has progressed considerably in recent years. This paper discusses some of the most controversial issues and focuses on three in particular: the legal status of the "public forest" faced with the perpetuation of pre-liberal legal rules: the problems arising when studying privatization processes and their consequences; and, finally, the definition of state intervention upon the forests, particularly as regards rural society. In these three fields, a variety of outcomes seems to have been the prevailing characteristic, according to previous legal and socioeconomic conditions, despite the legal standardization set in motion by the Liberal State. The aforementioned variety is here put in relation to the different ways and intensities of market penetration and capitalism consolidation.
