Abstract

Habermas has explained how politics and culture remain at a permanent break-even point in current societies. This scheme is likewise an appropriate framework to research past societies. This article resorts to legal records to explain the political culture of the peasants of some rural communities of northern Spain under the Ancien Régime. These documents shred excellent light on the basic popular political lexicon in these rural communities. The lexicon reveals the main values underpinning the social relationships and also facilitates our understanding of the limits facing any cultural limits that had had failed to take those values, particularly honour, into account.
