Abstract

Military Orders are traditionally considered as associations of noblemen linked by narrow bonds of fidelity that regulate the allotment of the political power as that of the patrimony. Taking the Order of St. James as an example, the author expounds the necessity of revising these assumptions and conferring a primordial paper on kinship in the definition of these institutions. The expansion of some lineages within this Order, together with their confrontations to monopolize the political and economic powers, would explain the historical evolution of this order which resulted in a mere institution to the service of the nobility and, later, to the monarchy.
