Abstract

This paper analyses changes in techniques of production and reproduction, and in forms of organization of cattle farming in Cantabria between 1750 and 1930. The authors consider the ecological, institutional, economic and incidental constraints which determined the origins of specialization in cattle within the primary sector. Secondly, the principal phases of technical change are considered. The main conclusion is that the evidence does not sustain the idea of unconnected chance as the cause of technical change but it does suggest a cumulative process where each stage conditions the range of options for all subsequent stages.
