Abstract

This work describes the mussel aquaculture sector of Puerto Almanza, Argentina, identifying and analyzing the different components of the supply chain in 2011. The mussel aquaculture is a complementary productive activity for the socio-economical development of Almanza Port, which is in a development stage in regard with the artisanal as well as the industrial sector. There are possibilities of growth and endogenous development, although some institutional and social problems were detected in its supply chain. The area of cultivation is not still consolidated. During the consolidation process towards sustainability, the activity´s main actors must intervene, but the State must play the fundamental role. For the long term, the recommendation is to ensure the proper management of this mussel production area in a framework of sustainable and participatory development.
