Employment And Production Of Galicia In The Period 2001-2008. Effects Of Industry And Tourism On The Service Sectors

Abstract

We analyze the evolution of real Value-Added and Employment by sector in Galicia for 2001-2008, with special focus on the important positive effects of industry and tourism on the development of services and other production sectors. During this period the regional economy of Galicia has experienced an important advancement regarding convergence with Spanish average about real production per capita, real consumption per capita and rate of non agrarian employment. The increase of real industrial production has had high positive effects and it is important to emphasize that Galicia needs economic policies addressed to increase even more industrial development because it is already low in comparison with the most advanced European regions. Tourism has experienced a positive increase in the provinces and territorial areas of Galicia, both regarding hotel tourism and extrahotel tourism, and it has had also positive effects on real income and employment in services and other sectors.
