Abstract

In touch with nature, the green landscapes, open fields, relaxing, quiet spaces, fresh air, cultivated areas, livestock and the traditional culture of their people, are only just a few historical attributes linked to rural spaces in Galicia. Are territorial elements and attributes that condition the market enthusiasm which creates an image as a tourist destination. The Galician countryside is facing intense transformation and a modification process of its leading elements that give its identity and uniqueness, for example its landscapes and culture, which repercussions the demands of the tourists. Rural tourism in Galicia is progressively less attractive caused by a failed and non–planning tourism development model, initiated in the 1990s. The oversupply inheritance encouraged by government subsidies, that have not taken into account the unique and singular elements of Galician rural spaces, have caused a gradual devaluation of rural tourism. The absence of a complementary supply and the non–competitive prizes in comparison to other attractive tourist destinations are hindering a change in this way, conditioned by a regressive trend to a model in crisis.
