Abstract

The paper analyzes and evaluates natural resources as well as components of the labor, economic and financial potential of the North-West Federal District (NWFD). The key NWFD indices (the labor market, the transport system, the investment structure, the budget support) are compared with the average values and similar indices of other federal district macroregions. The regional labor productivity index as the most important criterion of the economic efficiency is analyzed. The NWFD competitive edge in the processing industries is noted along with the lag in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The innovative activity in the region as the main component of the development potential is highlighted. A focus is put on factors that enhance the potential of the NWFD region and those inhibiting its development.
