Abstract

The paper analyzes the spatial features of the Russian economy over the long-run period. It is proved that the population tends to concentrate in places where more added-value is produced and, therefore, there are better conditions for its reproduction and application of labor and capital. Practical aspects of the government activities aimed at the development of large, medium and small cities of Russia are considered. The key directions for the development of small and medium-sized cities in the near future are identified. The role of urban agglomerations at the current stage of the country’s development is assessed. The proposals to improve the regional economic policy mechanisms, ensure the accelerated economic growth and gradually reach the sustainable development of the economy are set forth.
