Examination of Identity Statues of Undergraduate Students According to Different Variables

Abstract

Undergraduate education plays a signifiant role in the physical and mental development of adolescents. Their environment, especially family, friends, teachers, reveal new social capabilities of adolescent. The aim of our research is to determine whether there are factors or variables affecting identity development of the individual or not. Perceived social support (from family and friends) and variables like age, gender, class, faculty and socioeconomic condition are the main factors examined in this investigation. Findings have proved that social support from friends and family affects identity statues in different ways. According to the research results, an important predictor on achieved identity status is the perceived social support. There is found a difference in identity status regarding socioeconomic condition of all other variables. Moreover, we can state that psychological consultation centers, support groups, various social activities and university teachers are among those factors which can be helpful for developing adolescent identity statue and overcoming identity problems.
