Intrinsic Motivational Canvass in the Indian Service Sector: An Empirical Study

Abstract

Any company would expect its employees to act for achieving goals so that it attains success in its venture. The employees must develop the belongingness which augur their desire to serve the company for longer time period. This commitment would come only through motivation which has direct effect on the performance level. There are intrinsic and extrinsic categories of motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within and is self-satisfying whereas extrinsic motivation is caused through the external motivators like monetary and non-monetary rewards. We have taken a survey approach based on the responses to a questionnaire to find intrinsic motivational state of the officers working in both private and public sector companies in the service sector in India. Three intrinsic motivators perceived competence, perceived autonomy and perceived relatedness have been chosen for this study. In-role performance has been taken as a measure of overall motivation of personnel. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis have been used to find the effects of intrinsic motivators on performance of employees. Effect of demographic variables like age, experience, education and background on the intrinsic motivators has also been studied. The study suggests a strong link between satisfaction of intrinsic motivators and performance of employees.
