The World Tourism Organization (WTO) reported 17.6 million international tourist arrivals (excluding day-visits) in its Middle East region in 1999, 17% above 1998, and 220 million in its ‘Mediterranean’ region. Receipts reported from international tourism in the Middle East region totalled US$10.1 billion (including receipts from day-visits, excluding international fares), 18% above 1998 (in current US$). Tourist arrivals, receipts and hotel demand and capacity are presented for 13 countries of the Middle East region and 20 other Mediterranean countries.
