Abstract

Europe continues to lead the world in international tourism. The World Tourism Organization reported 394 million tourist arrivals in 1999 (excluding day-visitors) in its European Region, 2.7% above 1998, with receipts from international tourism totalling US$235 billion in 1999 (including receipts from day-visitors, excluding international fares). Tourist arrivals and receipts are presented for the 58 countries and territories (by sub-regions), also hotel nights (inbound and domestic) and rooms, with revised arrivals totals for the other five WTO regions in 1998–99.
