The effect of attitude and awareness education for children with disabilities in primary school students: A randomised study

Abstract

Background and aims: This non-blind, randomised-controlled study evaluates the effect of attitude and awareness Education for children with disabilities in primary school students. Method: The population consisted of children 9 to 11 years-old attending the fourth grade of a primary-school in a city in Türkiye. The sample selection was not made, and the study was conducted on the entire population. One hundred twenty-seven students met the sample selection criteria. At the end of the application, 55 children in the intervention group and 55 children in the control group formed the research group. The ‘Disability Attitude Development Education’ programme was applied to the intervention group. Results: Children in both intervention and control groups did not exhibit statistically significant differences in pre-education attitude scores, when comparing attitude scale scores towards disabled children in pre-education, post-education and retest. However, significant differences were observed in post-education and retest attitudes. Conclusions: The education given to primary school students positively influenced their attitudes towards disabled individuals.
