Toward a Marxist Theory of Racism: Two Essays by Harry Chang

Abstract

The author analyzes the Race Question in the United States, relying upon Marx's method of logical-historical analysis. He investigates the dialectics of the racial categories Black and White, their historical production, and their connection with class formation in the United States. The author concludes that bourgeois society is a necessary condition for the birth of racial categories and he asserts that the supposed racism of the United States working-class exists subjectively and only to the extent that it articulates its interests as a particular class within the bounds of civil society.
