School Construction and Waste Diversion: An Interorganizational Perspective

Abstract

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore reducing, reusing, and recycling materials during a demolition, renovation, and construction project at a Vermont public school site. Participants included school district representatives, architects, builders, trades-people, end-use marketers, and solid waste specialists, with each of the participants representing a different perspective of school construction. The study underscored potential changes other participants could adopt that might lead to increasing the total capacity of school construction stakeholders to divert solid waste materials from the waste stream. Themes studied included (a) valuing waste diversion, (b) building infrastructure capacity, (c) balancing cost-effectiveness with strategies, and (d) communicating strategies and obstacles. In particular, the study identified activities currently used and obstacles to solid waste diversion efforts.
